I began work at the Warsaw steel mill as a locksmith. After that I spent a few more years in other workplaces.
During this entire period I trained fencing, specifically fencing with pes, at the Legia sports club. When I began my military service I had already achieved success in athletics. At the Youth "Spartacade" I took second place in the junior class. I wa offered a full-time position in the army. After finishing high school and obtaining my diploma I completed a two-year coaching course at the Physical Education Academy in Warsaw. During this period I could boast great sporting successes. I took second place among the Poles, and fifth place overall, at the Polish International Championships. They were extremely competitive with the three-time world champion. Nikolaj Nikanczykov, and the world champion from Havana, Bohdan Andrzejewski, with whom I won my bouts. I also won the individual tournament in Soci, Russia, between teams from Poland and the Soviet Union. I am particularly proud of that success because there were Poles from Lvov rooting for me in the stands. I also finished in eleventh place in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world in Heidenheim, Germany. In Poland, I placed first and third in the team tournaments in Katowice. After a four-year break form training, I took fourth place in a tournament in Wroclaw and ended my sporting career. The main reason was heart disease (anoxia of the left ventricle) resulting from strenuous training and not having had an operation on my nasal septum. Later there were side effects of hepatitis that I caught while in the hospital for tests.
